A special note
Our existing students will now Go Beyond by helping teach Grace how to use computers, search the internet and help her through her intensive training period. She needs to advance her English, math and basic schooling skills. We are currently working on preparing her for a major jump up in school quality. A chance she has earned through her hard work.
Normally students like Grace need to go back 1-2 years of school grade. There are a lot of special logistics and special needs that we’ll help Grace with as she joins our family. This will undoubtedly be a very scary time for her. Our students have all gone through this and they will be with her every step of the way.

Grace's Background
Grace is a 14-year-old girl who lives with her Grandmother. Her Mother passed away when she was 3 months old. Her grandmother is the one who has been taking care of her since then and she is the one who registered her for school. She used to walk more than 18 km a day in order to go to school for the 7 years of her primary education. Grace has been tirelessly committed to her studies and she did very well on her primary education final exams. Because of the distance from home to school she has been missing 2 sessions that are conducted in the morning as she starts walking from home at 06.00 am and arrives at school at 08:30. Her grandmother has been sick for some time now to the point she cannot work to provide for the family. She has been the only one who is fighting to make sure that Grace doesn’t lack anything and continues her studies; her father is a drunk who left the family long ago and relocated to Morogoro.
Grace and her grandmother feel privileged to get this chance. If she will be selected for this scholarship it will be a chance for her to advance her education to another level and achieve her dream of becoming a doctor or a pilot. She feels like this is a unique opportunity for her as there is no one who has completed a higher education in their family before because they could not afford to cover the school expenses.
When Grace was in primary school most of her teachers were supporting her; they catered for her school needs such as uniforms and exercise books because they saw her promise.
Grace likes mathematics and science subjects. During her free time she does revision, completes her homework and gets some time to play with her friends. When she faces some challenges she consults her grandmother first for help and if she can’t help she talks to her aunt and seeks for support. Her favorite food is Ugali and green vegetables.
Grace is so happy that she has been selected to attend the three-month training (pre form one training) that is helping her learn English science and ICT. She believes these skills will help her as she will be joining form one next year.
Recruitment process
5 girls were taken through the recruitment process so that we can get one best that suits the position based on the criteria of the Learn more about how sponsoring works.
- Degree of students’ academic success
- Student Financial need and the support she needs
- Students self motivation and commitment towards education.
Selection process:
- Assessed their academic performance from Class 5 through 7 from their primary school and the exams that they did while in pre form 1
- Students wrote the letters to tell why do they need to be supported
- Home visit was done to the families to assess the need, family condition and financial status
- A letter from school to recommend a student, why should they be supported and verification of their academic performance
- Panel of interview reviewed the application and finalize the selection process
