Kayiok – Olympic Hopeful

Kayiok is a true Olympic Hopeful in the Javelin

He is the current national record holder in Tanzania for U-17, 700g Javelin at 55m.

He has won every major competition he's been in. In all cases breaking his own record and the competition record.

This is his story

In 2018, I had a chance to compete in the international schools athletics. I was doing javelin and when I competed, I won and I set my own record.

Last year, Braeburn international shool gave me a chance to be their private candidate in javelin.

We went to Nairobi for the competition. This was the most scariest thing for me. It’s my first time competing in a competition which had all international schools from Kenya.

Early in the morning before the competition, I went and checked the field. I tested the running path but without a javelin.

I saw my opponents doing the same thing I did. This made me more scared. There two huge guys whom I thought they’d win.

I went back and get ready to face the huge Lion that’s waiting for me.

After sometimes, the competition kicked off. We started our first throws and I was in position six with 42m and the first was on 46m. For a while, I thought that’s it, but then I said to myself, we gotta do this.

The record for this competition was set in 2009 and the record was 46m.

We did our second throws and I managed to be in position 2 with 45m and the first guy was on 46 still.

Now, my coach came to me and said, this is your last chance and you gotta make it count. My hand were all sweaty.

In the last throw, I decided to be the last one to throw. All the guys threw their javelins and none broke the record. So, I said to myself, if I did 45m in the second throw, why can’t I do it again?

Again, hope run through my body. Took the javelin and shook it really well. Took a deep breath and stood on the running path. This was my turn to shine and show those boys some dust.

I started my running and I remember from there was the noise made by my opponents. “What!” All I could hear when I was on the ground and when I stood up, saw the officiators extending the ropes and I knew I was off the mark.

I broke the old record and I set my own record of 55m.

This was my best moments in life I could have. Made myself proud and I felt like I have achieved a big thing.
